it's good to be back
17th-Jul-2006 02:12 pm
So, a few nights ago I had a Draco/Goyle dream. It was quite disturbing. This is all [livejournal.com profile] scoradh's fault, I assure you.

And now on to the urgent SGA questions:

1. If some of the senior crew were going on leave to Earth, do you think they'd use the Stargate or go on the Daedalus? The Stargate would be faster but would use the ZPM. The Daedalus would take for freaking ever, meaning they'd be gone probably three or four months at the least.

2. Say, why do radio transmissions go both ways through the gate? Like, we know matter travels in discrete units from the origin to the destination (and never from the destination to the origin) but why are radio waves different? I mean, we know that other waves (such as sound and, more importantly, light [which is also electromagnetic radiation, but with a higher frequency than that of radio waves]) don't travel through the gate in either direction so WHY THE HELL do radio waves get through? And then go both ways? I mean, I recognize that it's for PLOT PURPOSES, but a more scientific explanation would be nice. You don't have to be right, or anything, but any theories would be appreciated.

Oh, god, I love that story so much. ::wistful sigh:: um.

1. It'd have to be something really important for them to use the Gate, imo, otherwise it'd be the Daedalus or they'd just find a way around needing to go back.

2. Dude, magic! No, seriously, I don't know. I was crap at science in school and never even noticed the weirdness of that before just now. I'm sure there's got to be some duct-tape-and-rubber-bands sciencey way to explain it though. There always is.

1. Well, John and Rodney need to go on a vacation so they can realize they are IN LOVE. That's important, right? (I could, of course, just stick them on a picturesque Pegasus world, which is probably the way to go. Plus, there could be wacky wildlife. "zomg it has three heads! run!" or whatever)

2. I thought of this on the airplane when I was going on vacation, then spent the rest of the vacation puzzling over it while trying to do internet searches on my cellphone (two inch tall screen!) to find out if anyone else had an explanation. It's really annoying me now.

Also, I didn't know you liked SGA! Also also, FORD OMG! He's my homeboy.

1. lkl;k It is very important for John and Rodney to realize they're mtb, yes. On the one hand, I think that putting them in an unfamiliar place with strange people and/or things with big teeth would aid in the love!realizations. They'd have to rely on each other even more, you know? Buttsecks fo sho. But on the other hand, if that's not pinging for you, I think you should go wherever the story takes you and fuck the rest. Yes.

2. Ouch, yeah, that would be annoying. Someone's had to have questioned it though. hmm. Unless you're the only one and then you should get a cookie or something.

ahaha, yeah, I dig it. I guess I haven't been talking about it because of the summer hiatus and all. My love has gone dormant, I need to watch the new episode. :( I LOVE FORD. HE IS MY HOMEBOY AS WELL. SOMETIMES I CALL HIM SNAKE EYE AND WE DRINK MILKSHAKES AND TALK CRAZY.

They need to bring our boy Crazy-Eye F back into the action. He needs to have more tense scenes with Ronon. And Michael. Ford needs scenes with Michael.

And YES you need to watch the new episode. It is AWESOME TIMES TEN. Like, Allies sucked, but No Man's Land is SO FRIGGIN COOL. My brother and I watched it and we were all "OMG O_O" throughout. Also, there is nice Rodney/Ronon banter. And Lorne looking hot. And Zelenka being all ... zlenky. I don't know. I'm making up words now.

1. The Daedalus takes three weeks to get from Earth to Atlantis. In Intruder, en route, Elizabeth says it's been almost a month since John's promotion.

2. Because they don't necessarily have to be radio waves. The wormholes are transmitting matter *as energy* in between stargates. They're only in discrete packets because the stargate buffers snag the "data", wait till it's all of a person or a pj or a bottle of booze, then transmit it to the other side (the buffers are cleared for each dialing, hence the kawoosh.) Basically, matter is not energy until the stargate converts it either way.

Just pick an energy wave (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_spectrum) that they use to send and receive databursts (or look up Letters from Pegasus) -- they are mostly likely *not* talking via radio... they're sending data in some way that's then processed by their laptops, kinda like a YouTube through space.

And sorry, energy does travel through the gate, otherwise Rodney wouldn't have gotten a Wraith stunner in the face during Suspicion. ^^

Yeah, I had forgotten whether it was three or four weeks for the Daedalus to make the trip. Man, imagine being stuck on that thing for SOOOOOOO long.

Hmmm. Well when they go on away missions (or whatever they call them, blah, I'm still rather new to SG fandom and it's all headspinny) they can radio in to Atlantis through the gate, so since they said radio I assumed they meant radio.

The thing about all those different types of waves that you link to is that we don't have evidence that any of them get through the stargate. The only ones we have evidence for don't go through the gate. Maybe what I really don't understand is how anything without mass gets through the Stargate, because it's pretty clear from what they said on the show that the Stargate breaks down and stores matter. And waves aren't matter, so I don't get it. Perhaps there's some rule that the gate only transmits matter AND electromagnetic waves in the 300 MHz to 3 GHz range.

As to the stunners, I'd been previously operating on the assumption that they were some kind of plasma, which fits with the appearance and purpose of the weapon and also easily allows it to go through the gate. Plus, it just sounds cool.

Okay... my biggest thing I guess is that I've personally seen no evidence that energy *doesn't* pass through the gate. I have never seen any instance of that through all of SGA and the small chunk of SG-1 that I've seen. Matter is transmitted through the gate *as energy*. The stargate breaks down and stores matter *as energy*. There is no mass between the wormholes; everything's dematerialized into energy. Therefore plain energy would be transmitted, and I've seen it transmitted as Wraith dart beams, Wraith stunner beams, as an Ancient weapon overloading a gate remotely.

The gate itself is how the discrete packet thing works. It could very well just dump matter out piecemeal, feet, arms, head, but it's programmed to make sure the energy packet it has = one whole object, so it always deposits whole objects at the other end of the gate.

Hmm, see I was looking at that article as well and getting completely different things. I haven't seen the episode with the weapon overloading the gate remotely (is that the Dakara superweapon? I was looking for more information on that but was having trouble finding what I wanted, I think you just said it though) so that was what I really needed to hear though.

I guess, and it was this post of yours that made me get it, everything that goes through the gates is being converted into electromagnetic waves and sent across the aether. Which means radio waves would be no big deal because, hey, saves the trouble of the conversion process.

So, yes, thank you for continuing to come back and explain, because now it is not confusing me so much.
18th-Jul-2006 03:12 am (UTC)
And E=mc2. ^^; Whether or not it has mass doesn't, uh, matter. Whether or not it can be converted into energy and then back again into matter does. But if it's already energy, the gate doesn't have to do anything. It'll just transmit it. Does that make sense?
18th-Jul-2006 04:10 am (UTC)
Yes, now it makes sense. They need to explain this on the show. In great detail. Of course, they're probably not expecting people to get nitpicky about the 'gate travel details when we go all handwavey over the retrovirus, but whatever.

Did I mention I bought SGA?

... I don't like it.
17th-Jul-2006 10:40 pm (UTC)
I am working on a reply to that post about SGA that you made, but I keep getting sidetracked by other things. I don't know how many episodes you've watched, but I hated it all the way through episode ... seven, maybe, the one with the doctor and the people on the planet (you'll know the one) and then I started to like it and just continued liking it more and more until I almost exploded from the liking last night when I watched the third season premiere. So, like, it sucks at first and then it gets better. Except the thing where they don't really deal with moral issues. They're like, "eh, genocide, it's all good" and I'm like, "can we please at least have a DISCUSSION about this?" But the fic is often excellent, which is why I continued watching the show even when I wanted to stop (ie, after seeing the second episode, which was SO LAME. except for the part where John pushed Rodney off the balcony. LOL). And I totally didn't see any John/Rodney AT ALL until the second time through, which is why my OTPs on that show are Ronon/Rodney and Ronon/Weir.

Also, you don't even like Dr. Zelenka with his cute little glasses and his floppy hair and his Czech accent? If this is so, then there is no hope for you. *cries and hugs cuddly Zelenka, who is not good for porn, really, but is lovable anyway*

But if you continue not liking it you can always resell it online, or something.

I have not seen any of those eps, so probably ... I should. :D
17th-Jul-2006 10:59 pm (UTC)
Hehe. Yeah. It does get better. It's unfortunate that the first episodes are so bad. After Suspicion, though, they're mostly good except for Before I Sleep (although I know a lot of people who love that one) and The Gift (that one you saw with Teyla and the alien mindthingies).
