stargate sg-1.
10th-Aug-2008 07:46 pm
Guys, I am trying to watch the first season of Stargate SG-1 and it. is. so. boring. I cannot believe that people watched this show before Claudia Black was on it. I am ten episodes in and about to die from the dullness.

eta: Now I want to edit the "needs more Claudia Black" tag into EVERY SINGLE POST except the Claudia/Lena picspam. Because it's SO TRUE. Everything could be improved with more Claudia Black.

Yeah, the first season was pretty cringe-worthy. The writing sucked. The continuity was severely lacking. Carter whined about being a girl way too much. The constant government bashing was annoying (especially as it was coming from Canadian writers), although somewhat amusing as most of the stuff Jackson complained about is rampant in academia, too. I am constantly amazed that it was renewed. But that was early on in Showtime's original series attempts and they must have been desperate for a show or something. It improved after the first season; the bashing calmed down a lot, the 'canon' started being consistent, Jackson & Carter stopped whining so much and RDA kept getting better looking. They did introduce zats in the 2nd season, but I forgive them for that.

So if I can hold out for a dozen more episodes it'll get better? THANK GOD. I was dreading trying to make it through eight more seasons if it was all going to be like this. My main complaint is that none of the characters except Teal'c seem to have any personalities yet. I mean, Daniel has one a little, but at this point it's mainly "omg, my wife is a goa'uld! life sucks!" which is not exactly interesting.

You watched Cold Lazarus and don't think O'Neill has a personality yet? Well, they at least become more of a team, people who seem to actually like each other going into the second season. At least I thought so.

Cold Lazarus was one of my favorites so far. I just finished Torment of Tantalus and I have to admit I LOLed when the naked man hugged Daniel, Jack, and Teal'c. I think part of my dissatisfaction probably has to do with the fact that there aren't really spaceships yet, and so there aren't big fun space battles (which are, you know, the reason I watch science fiction in the first place). All this tedious "let's traipse around and discover new planets!" thing isn't much fun for me. I want to see shit get blown up!

I confess to being a spaceship battle whore, too. Unfortunately, except for the cool death gliders, we don't get to see any big ships until the last couple episodes of the season. You know how they can never keep the Hive or Ancient ships they find on SGA? The tradition started on SG1.

arrrgh. Whenever they find a cool new ship on SGA I am all OMG AMAZING GREAT SHIP! and geek out MORE THAN JOHN SHEPPARD about it, and then they take it away! They are so cruel!

I'm also waiting for the episode where they meet the Asgard forreals because their minds are totally going to blow! I hope there are some good "wtf it's the greeeeys!" reaction shots in there.

This is SO TRUE.

You know what SUCKS? The episodes I downloaded of Farscape ran out and I won't have the time or money to netflix/buy them before school starts! FAIL. Watching things goes so slowly when I also have to attend to my classes.

Hmmm. I was considering watching it after I finish with Star Trek... no good, eh? What season does Claudia Black show up?
11th-Aug-2008 11:39 pm (UTC)
Uh, she shows up in season 8 but isn't around regularly until seasons 9/10. I hear it gets better even before then, but I'm just kind of shallowly waiting around for Claudia Black. I'll report back as I watch further! Also Stargate Atlantis kind of rocks and the fandom is especially rockingest in the slash fanfic department, if that's your thing.

AND PLEASE TELL ME YOU ARE PLANNING ON WATCHING STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE. I will totally even upload some DS9 episodes for you somehow if you're not sure, because it is THE BEST STAR TREK EVER. The first couple of seasons are kind of slow, but it is absolutely worth it for the amazing brilliance of the later ones. Sisko is my favorite captain tied with Janeway (SO AWESOME), and Kira Nerys is my favorite Star Trek character ever. It's got brilliant plots and deals with the same sort of themes as BSG does -- so much shit from BSG is lifted from DS9 that it's kind of funny (and Ron Moore was involved as producer/writer on both shows, so). It's not as "hip" as BSG but I also feel it was often not as heavy-handed with the social messages. I'm not sure how I got derailed on this tangent but uh. There it is.

OOoo. I will definitely have to check out Atlantis.

I am indeed planning on watching DS9. I have to admit I've seen a lot of the first season, and I'm not entirely in love. I don't hate it, but it hasn't gripped me yet. Of course, I ended up watching it a bit out of order, so that may have contributed (I bought the first season from iTunes, and uploaded them on iPhone in the wrong order, lol). I'll be netflixing it after I finish Voyager.

haha. I love BSG! Though, I definitely agree that the social commentary gets a bit heavy handed sometimes, lol.

DS9 is like TNG in that it takes about three or four seasons to get good. Sadly, the earlier seasons are necessary to grasp the plot arcs in the later ones, otherwise I'd just tell you to skip them. Still, there are some AWESOME eps scattered through the early seasons, so if you can push through the dull ones (and if you made it through the first season of TNG, lol, that shouldn't be a problem) the payoff is worth it. I was lucky in that I started watching it when the fifth season was airing, lol. My username actually comes from 13-year-old me mishearing a name from a Voyager episode ("Ashes to Ashes" lol) and writing it down. HAHA GEEKY USERNAME TRIVIA.

WORD. It's why I never got past the ep with the yellow sand (grr, eighty euro boxset).
11th-Aug-2008 11:42 pm (UTC)
OH GOD SADLY THE YELLOW SAND EPISODE IS THE BEST I'VE SEEN SO FAR OF THIS SEASON. Though episode 10 randomly has a naked man hugging Daniel and Jack, and I was pretty entertained by that (oh, I'm so easily amused by implied slashiness). I really enjoyed the tenth season, but I'm just not too keen on this one. I hear it will get better and I'm stubborn, so I'll persevere... but I also totally bought the first season of Supernatural (on sale! $18!) so I can switch to lighter fare (HOT BOYS) whenever I get bored.
12th-Aug-2008 08:24 pm (UTC)
I see Supernatural really cheap here too, but I always walk past with the thought: You're already pretty low, do you want to descend to slashing BROTHERS? Because it would happen. I know this. (I read it anyway, but it's okay because the fact that they're related is never ever mentioned.)
14th-Aug-2008 09:45 am (UTC)
You know, the only time I actually slash siblings is if they're twins or, uh, Pevensies. Which I just typed at first as PERVEnsies. That's true as well, I suppose. But I have A LOT of other semi-incestuous ships. Like if people have a sibling relationship but aren't related (like are adopted siblings)? I AM SO THERE. Then of course there's Peter and Claire from Heroes... and he's, like, her UNCLE, but I didn't KNOW that when I started shipping them because they didn't TELL ME until halfway through the first season.
14th-Aug-2008 06:08 pm (UTC)
You know, that actually made me feel a bit normal-er? But adopted siblings, wowza. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more in real life. My favourite is when divorcees with kids the same age get married and have to, you know, SHARE SHOWERS. I totally have an origific idea for that all planned out.

But adopted siblings, wowza. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more in real life.

Have you read those studies that show that kids who grow up together, even if they're not related, have the same gut "ewwwwwwww" reaction against people that they grew up with as you're supposed to have against incest? Apparently they've found that the key is GROWING UP TOGETHER and not BEING RELATED. I also read one (not the most scientific study in the world, but to be fair to them it wasn't exactly something they could set up as an experiment) that showed that siblings who didn't grow up together are more likely to be attracted to EACH OTHER than to other people. Because they, like, sense an ~instant connection~ or something, and interpret that in a sexual way. idk it was pretty WTFy but entertaining.

I totally have an origific idea for that all planned out.

WRITE IT.

Oh MAAAAAAAAN, that reminds me of the father and daughter who were split up because he went to jail for armed robbery (way more offputting imo than blood relation!) and they met up and fell in love and HAD A KID. It's totally borne out.

Nah, I've already written my origific for this summer. Maybe next year!
