[old] introductory post

Hi.

I suppose I should start this journal with an introduction. I'm Jehnt, and I've been reading the Harry Potter books since the second book was published. I've been lurking in the online fandom for about six and a half years and have only now decided to de-lurk. Or, well, I suppose "now" in a somewhat relative sense, because I keep deciding to de-lurk then getting shy and lurking again.

Interestingly enough, I finally REALLY decided to de-lurk only days after one of my friends came across this journal. So, Sarah, if you're reading this, omg hi (and hush, you)! Okay, moving on.

Probably the most important things to know about me are that I'm easily entertained, and that I find people quite fascinating.

I meant to start this out with an art post, but my scanner is refusing to work today, and I think I'm going to have to track the cd that came with it down and reinstall the stuff before I can scan things in, so the art post won't be happening.

The following is, you know, stuff about me. Chances are that if I friended you, I've been reading your journal off and on for at least a year, so I know something about you. Now you can read stuff about me.

Instead, I'll tell you about a fic I started writing one time. It was Harry/Draco, and Draco was in Mexico for no real reason (other than Draco + Mexico obviously = humor). Harry has to go to Mexico to track down Draco, or something, you know. Then they're both very insecure, and they possibly throw things at each other since they hate each other LIKE A LOT, but in the end they maybe sort of like each other a little. I actually have two different versions of this. One is H/D and the other is Ron/Draco. They were both written before HBP, so things will change if I ever go back to it, but in my head it's aaaaaall worked out.

So, anyway, I've been shipping H/D since the first time I read the first book (sixth grade!). I remember being utterly surprised the first time I stumbled across H/D slash fiction, mainly because, hey, other people had the same idea about them. Since then, I've vacillated between liking H/D and Ron/Draco, but there's very little long, plotty Ron/Draco, and I like long fics with plenty of plot. I also like Snarry, Sirius/Remus, Harry/Ron, and Remus/Draco. Those are my preferred pairings, but I'll read pretty much anything (except Harry/Ginny, because OMG NO). Oh, and in het pairings I like Harry/Luna and Ron/Hermione.

I suppose the fic that I was first really excited about was Draco Dormiens. I don't really like the other two in the trilogy; for me, they started to get confusing and difficult to read. I adore Novembersnow's Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Emma Grant's Left My Heart (for some reason, those two always go together in my head. Were they WIPs at the same time, or something?). I finally read Lust Over Pendle a couple of months ago. I hadn't ever read it because I thought I wouldn't like it, but I did, I did. I tend to like long fics, but I also really like short ones. Okay, so, I like both. But, no matter how good the plot, I only like them when they're well-written and there aren't thousands of distracting mistakes, such as "Blaise Zambini." Because "Zambini" is like "Zamboni," and those are the things that clear the ice at the skating rink, and I was pretty sure I wasn't reading about those. Or, better yet, "Blaze Zambini." Oh, yeah.

Also, I really, really like silly stories and stories where someone gets terribly hurt, but then they're okay. And, errrr, any fic with near-senile Dumbledore rambling about candy, playing hopscotch (this was seriously in one!), or being randomly manipulative. But not Dumbledore slash, as that's just wrong.

My favorite characters in canon (in pseudo-order!):

  • Fred & George Weasley - I've liked them since the second book, when they said something along the lines of "seriously evil wizard coming through!"

  • Luna Lovegood - The first time I read the fifth book I thought, "wtf, I don't like that Luna." The second time I read the fifth book, I thought, "OMG I HEART LUNA!" Nargles. In the mistletoe. WITH A CANDLESTICK.

  • Dumbledore - Dude, he likes CANDY. I like candy. He makes very little sense when he speaks. I make very little sense when I speak. Clearly, Dumbledore is meant to represent me. So, yeah. Plus, he's just effing insane.

Also, I have pretty icons.

Hahaha. Yeah, 3T was a WIP for an eternity, so LMH was completed during that time as well.

Also, thank you! I'm flattered. ♥

You're welcome.

hope you don't mind me friending you. I've just guffawed too many times reading this intro post not to join up. :P

Because "Zambini" is like "Zamboni,"

I don't know why but this had me in tears. in a good way. lol.

Also? If you like long plotty H/D you must read [livejournal.com profile] geoviki's "A Thousand Beautiful Things" and its sequel. Both novel-length and funny, well-written, gorgeous H/D interaction, and chockers full of plot. Lemme know if you need help finding the links.

Oh, I've read those TOO MANY TIMES, omg. Well, okay, I've read the sequel only once, but I've read "A Thousand Beautiful Things" so many times it's sickening. The thing is, there are only so many well-done long H/D stories out there -- I've read just about every one I've found (even the ones that didn't sound interesting at all). At one point I started regularly venturing into the pit of voles to read plotless, grammarless drivel to try to satisfy my longing. Shortly after that, I decided that if I wanted long fic, by god, I should just get to writing.

Of course, I'm terrible at coming up with plots, so although I have three fics I've begun (because I kept thinking of really clever beginnings), I'm not sure exactly where they should go next. Two are postwar, and one is just postHBP (so the plot for that is actually rather obvious. something to do with horcruxes! ... but WHAT). The postwar ones, I think I want one to be a murder mystery, and one to be ... something else, but it's kind of evading me as to what. The thing is, to me, the plot is always totally secondary to the characters, so I don't tend to think about it much. Grrr. I should probably just make up a totally random plotline and go with it, just so I can finish writing something.

I rambled on again. I tend to do that. I always try not to, but I don't succeed very often.

I'm glad I amused you. Have friended you back. Whee!

i'm sorry, i was forced to friend you because you said brilliant things in fungus_files fluff post and i came over to your journal and refrained from friending when i read this post (barely, but i thought, she doesn't even know you and it'll be wierd and you can keep tabs through fungus), but then went and read your userinfo and couldn't resist, because you amuse the shite out of me and well. there you go.

I've friended you back. It took kind of a while because I have this thing where I'd, you know, kind of like to read VAST AMOUNTS of your journal before friending so I am not like, "Wha-? Who?" when you post.

Also, STAR WARS ICON. Yeah, I need to get a paid account so I can have more icon variety. *shakes fist at measly six spaces*

wow. i really wasn't expecting you to, since i pretty much came out of left field, but v. glad you did. [*bounces*]

and yeah, star wars my first fandom. still love it.

Ah, well, I wasn't really expecting anyone random to friend me, so I didn't have a very clear, "Friend away!" policy in my userinfo because I thought I pretty much came out of left field. Plus, I have a sort of ... lack of posts. I'm working on that, though. Also, lj would be kind of pointless without the community aspect, yeah? God knows I'm not going to go write about Harry Potter in my diary. I don't even HAVE a diary. (Okay, correction: I own several blank books which people might term "diaries," however, to my knowledge, I have only attempted to keep a diary once. That attempt lasted only four days and everything I wrote was entirely fictional anyway, so I don't know that it could even properly be called "an attempt at having a diary.")

Star Wars was my first fandom as well. Do you read the EU books at all?
8th-Jan-2006 08:13 am (UTC)
i spent years keeping diaries (or journals). but i haven't done much since i started writing more fic. but i did write about harry potter (and elijah wood, and even tobu mcguire occasionally)

er, and i'm old, so when i was a star wars fan (when it first came out) there weren't many books. i red some later when they appeared, but i wasn't as in to it then. so no, am ashamed to say i don't even know what the EU books are. [*looks sheepish*]

I am somewhat of a lurker myself..though I've been occassionally popping up to comment on people's fics once in a while. Personally, I'm a Harry/Ron, Remus/Sirius, and (canon-ly) Ron/Hermione, but sometimes I do like a little Draco action ^^
Dumbledore slash deifinitely is so wrong.
You seem utterly cool, so I am going to add you. <3

Harry/Ron! I didn't read that pairing much until like ... a month ago, maybe, but OMFG IT IS THE CUTEST PAIRING EVER, I think.

Added you back. Eeep.
