How can over half the class fail an OPEN-NOTE quiz?

It wasn't even one of those open-note quizzes that made you interpret things. It was straightforward were-you-paying-attention-in-lecture and did-you-read-the-assigned-book stuff. WHAT THE HELL. It seriously wasn't that hard.
