7th-Mar-2009 09:09 am - haha, why do i watch such terrible tv?
Amazon released a "Kindle for iPhone" application and so nowwww I have Kindle books on my phone, yayyyy. Right in time for my vacation (which is a road trip to the Grand Canyon, and other places of interest along the way, and which will involve a lot of sitting around in the car needing something to do).

For some reason (curiosity?) I watched the first several episodes of The Secret Life of the American Teenager. God this show is crappy. I think the best summary I can think of is that the one-minute "previously on" things can completely and entirely accurately sum up the previous episodes without leaving anything important out. Never a very good sign. And I don't know if the characterization becomes more complex later, but right now the demonization and punishment of the sexually active unmarried females on the show is just... ick. The only truly likeable character is the guidance counselor. I'm going to watch a few more episodes, partially because I want to see if it improves and partially out of a fascination with the trashiness, but I don't have high hopes.

Also at the bookstore I got The Dark Knight and Prince Caspian on DVD, and then one of those Garth Nix books with the pretty covers. I was excited about this.

and ughhh I get pre-trip anxiety so badly. I've been so anxious about going on vacation that I have barely been able to eat or sleep for the past few days.

31st-Jan-2009 09:05 am - my top five iphone applications
I know a lot of you have iphones/ipod touches, so I decided that I would put my application whorage to good use and list out my favorites, in case there's anything here you haven't heard of that catches your interest. They're in no particular order, really.

Air Sharing, $4.99
(link to itunes)

This is basically just a document reader. It's pretty fucking sweet though and reads basically every type of document I would ever need to put in it. The one negative is that it hangs if you've already got a huge file open and are trying to switch from landscape to portrait. But if you're like me and feel the need to tote around several ebooks, multiple policy reports, and school reading assignments, it's a must-have.

Classics, $4.99
(link to itunes)

Okay, so, yes, all the books available on it are no longer under copyright, so you COULD just download them from Project Gutenberg and pop them in Air Sharing, but you'd lose out on the pretty pretty interface, complete with page flipping animations and little page flipping noises! But I guess it's really only worth it if they're books you read/re-read anyway. BUT I LOVE IT A LOT.

WordFlow, $0.99 (free version also available)
(link to itunes)

ZOMG MY FAVORITE IPHONE GAME. I love the look of it and the little KACHING sounds. The idea of this game is that you have a grid of letters and you have to slide them around to make words. The challenge is that you have to THINK of words to make and then rapidly slide all the letters around to fit. The free version just has the one-minute mode of the game while the pay one has one, three, and ten. I am sooooooo addicted to this game.

TanZen, $0.99 (free version also available)
(link to itunes)

It's basically just a tanagram thing. Well-designed, very pretty, with intuitive controls. I love tanagrams a lot so I think it's pretty rad.

Shopper, $1.99
(link to itunes)

HAHAHAHA GROCERY-LIST APPLICATION. I picked it over all the others because I can customize the categories to sort by aisle and because it has a pretty icon. It's easy enough to use that I could figure it out, and checking off the little boxes is quite satisfying. And if you add the price of the groceries to the thing, you can see how much you'll be spending. Nifty!

I made icons! Not many, and not fantastic ones, but it's the first time in FOREVER that I've been able to sit down and muck about in photoshop. Of course, since I haven't done anything with it in so long, I'm sitting there going "HOW DO I MAKE IT CHANGE SIZES? I WANT A SMALL PICTURE, NOT A BIG ONE" etc. sigh. Anyway! Merlin icons! Obama+team icons! Hopefully soon I will get around to doing the icon things I'm SUPPOSED to be doing!

and my throat still hurts which suuuuucks esp. when eating food.

p.s. I think boyfriend is jealous of Obama. Or else a secret Republican. He always goes "hmph!" and looks annoyed when I talk about how awesome Obama is.

p.p.s. for the past week I have been sleeping ~20 hours a day. WHAT.

19th-Jan-2009 04:58 am - i'm not rip van winkle, i swear
Ugh okay in the last 48 hours I have been awake like maybe 8 hours total. HOWEVER, I feel a lot better! My tonsils are no longer SUPERHUGE and my throat and ears hurt much less. But I accidentally slept through a planned date with Robot, whoops. Actually I'm not sure how accidental it was because he wanted to have a conversation about the state of our relationship or something (this is something he feels the need to do like every two weeks; it's really annoying) and I may have been unconsciously avoiding it.

And a LONG TIME AGO I did a meme where I named some fandoms and people said which characters from those fandoms they thought I was most like. I said I would post which I thought I was most like, but then only [ profile] kandigurl replied and I got all distracted by finals and didn't. BUT NOW I WILL. So:

1. Star Wars - Princess Leia. I HOPE SO, ANYWAY.
2. Star Trek (any series) - Kira? Or Ezri Dax. I'm not sure.
3. Battlestar Galactica - I DON'T KNOW. Probably Lee. He's kind of stuffy and bitchy but holds to his ideals, and he has his occasional moments of emo. And is totally in love with Kara. SO THAT SOUNDS LIKE ME.
4. Bones - Cam. Or Sweets. lollllll.
5. Gossip Girl (for the lols) - idk. I want to be Blair but I'm probably more Vanessa.
6. Arrested Development - Lindsay, without a doubt. Shallow and materialistic? Yessir, that's me.
7. Chuck - Ellie. She's such a good big sister! I hope I'm a good big sister.
8. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Willow, probably. I most want to be like Anya, but I'm totally a Willow.
9. Angel! - Fred, of course!
10. Superheroes (any and all) - oh dear, I don't know. I wanted to see what other people thought. I own a pretty spiffy Wonder Woman tote bag though. I carry my groceries in it.

5. Well, that was an episode.

Battlestar Galactica 4x13 - Sometimes A Great Notion )

I cannot wait to dl and rewatch.

Aaaaand okay apparently Razor counts as episodes 1 and 2 of season 4, which means this is episode 13, not 11. Whatever.

16th-Jan-2009 07:12 pm - yay battlestar galactica
soclose to new BSG. Now FOUR people are here watching with me (three have been here for NINE HOURS already), so the excitement is mounting. AND WE CANNOT LOAD BATTLESTAR WIKI, which is TERRIBLE. Fortunately our most URGENT question was answered by wikipedia (Q: Callsign of Sam Anders? A: Longshot, in case you were wondering), but we have others we NEED Battlestar Wiki for. Arrrrgh.

Anyway, new episode in TWO HOURS.

16th-Jan-2009 08:29 am - bsg returns tonight!
battlestar battlestar battlestar

*reduced to incoherent flailing*

Today I'm rewatching the first ten episodes of season four with, among other people, someone who has never seen them before. That'll be interesting.

omg yayyyy.

15th-Jan-2009 09:56 am - bsg bsg bsg. and icon meme. but mostly omg bsg tomorrow!
That icon meme everyone has done. )

The exciting news of the day is that I am slightly less sick than I was before. I still have to take ibuprofen on a regular basis to keep the swelling of my tonsils down to a manageable size, but I can eat real food again, which is a relief.

BSG TOMORROW OMG. Am planning an all-day extravaganza. Dunno how that will work out with being sick but I'm going to try anyway.

13th-Jan-2009 11:30 am - that's a space station.
1. I downloaded a Wall-E ringtone for my phone and it is sooooo fun to hear such a little happy song play whenever anyone calls!

2. MERLIN. WHAT. The flist has been going crazy over it in the past couple of weeks, so I decided to check it out. At first all I thought was that Merlin and Arthur weren't very attractive and had stupid haircuts. I didn't want to watch a show where the people had stupid haircuts! But by the end of the first episode, omgggggg. Arthur and Merlin are just too hilarious together! I was flailing and squeeing through all their shared scenes. So I suppose I'll be watching the rest of the show during (what I hope are) these last few days of being sick (I HOPE LAST FEW).

3. Robot wants to celebrate our two-month anniversary. Is this a normal thing? I've never had anyone want to celebrate an anniversary before. At first I thought it was SUPER WEIRD but then on Gossip Girl Nate skipped Blair's brunch for Chuck in order to celebrate his two-month anniversary with Vanessa, and I KNOW I shouldn't be taking my social cues from that show, but umm, it made it not so "OMG WHAT" for me. I mean, had he not told me about it, I wouldn't have even known. However, now that I DO know, I have realized that our three-month anniversary will fall EXACTLY on Valentine's Day. *rolls eyes*

4. Robot, last night: "Your tonsils are so huge that when Ben Kenobi looked at them, he said, "That's no moon!""

I think that speaks for itself, really.

Gossip Girl 2x15 - Gone With the Will )

And I am SO GLAD I no longer feel so miserable that I cannot even watch tv. THAT, lj, was truly horrendous. I had to LISTEN TO AUDIOBOOKS for entertainment. I LOATHE audiobooks. It was AWFUL.

12th-Jan-2009 06:54 pm - and lichen will take over the world
Ahh, and another thing: In front of the BSG webisodes there were always these ads for Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. Now, when advertisements start playing, I usually switch away to a news tab or read a page in a book, and just listen for when it's over. So I never READ the name of the movie.

Which left me with the impression that the movie was called Rise of the LICHENS. And I kept hearing some guy being like, "Will we be men, or will we be LICHEN!??!?" and I thought it sounded like the stupidest movie ever. I mean, it was about some dudes who wanted to turn into lichen and take over the world? By nefarious use of LICHEN? Didn't seem terribly efficient.

I was never so relieved/disappointed as when I finally realized that word was "lycan."

9th-Jan-2009 05:37 pm - ugh.
So I have mono. Oh joy. I also have epically swollen tonsils (I can barely speak out loud!) that are covered in the most distinct and horrific white patches ever. My physician was SHOCKED by them. His eyes nearly bugged right out of his head and he made a sort of "gack!" noise that is not the sort of thing you want to hear from your doctor.

Anyway, being sick is stupid and inconvenient.

Also, I am so late at replying to comments. I open the window to do it and start typing and then just go to sleep. Apparently mono does that to you. Stupid!

15th-Dec-2008 05:04 pm - lost: one yellow legal pad, innumerable thoughts.
So lately everyone has been posting about things that made them happy that day. In a RADICAL twist on the meme, today I'm posting something that DOESN'T make me happy (I thiiiiink I normally post the opposite, but who knows):

I cannot find the yellow legal pad that has all the notes for the story I am working on. Things like, umm, character names, a MAP, research, plot notes, thematic notes, etc, and did I mention A CAREFULLY-DRAWN-OUT MAP OF THE FICTIONAL LAND? AND THE CHARACTER NAMES? ARRRRGH.

And I've looked through all the yellow papers in my file folders but apparently I didn't rip them out and file them. Which means they must be at home instead of at my apartment, which is worrying because my parents moved all my stuff around in September and I've had trouble finding anything that wasn't on a bookshelf (i.e., most everything). So it's potentially lost and I don't feel comfortable just forging ahead without my research and notes.

I would be biting my nails if I did that, but I don't, so.

11th-Dec-2008 05:08 am - random thoughts: clone edition!
Dr. Chase from House and Dr. Brenner from E.R. are like the same dude. I think Chase is kind of hotter, but this may just be because Dr. Morris is my E.R. crush and so everyone else on that show kind of fades in comparison. But anyway, I'm afraid Chase and Brenner are giving me unrealistic expectations when it comes to the likelihood of encountering hot blond Australian doctors in American hospitals. Because according to the teevee? They're just EVERYWHERE.

Also like the same dude? David Strathairn and Tom Amandes. Seriously, I can't tell them apart. I'm like, "oh, it's that hot old guy from Everwood and The Spiderwick Chronicles" whenever I see one of them, and then I remember they're actually two different people. They should just merge into one being, obviously.

Also also, Blair from Gossip Girl and, um, the girl on Friday Night Lights who looks like her. SAME PERSON. They eeeeeven have the same sort of romantic entanglements.
